A Bowie-Dick Test Pack evaluates the air removal efficiency and steam penetration of pre-vacuum steam sterilizers (autoclaves). It works by simulating a standard "worst-case" surgical pack to detect residual air pockets or equipment leaks that prevent proper sterilization

• Barrier Material: Original tests used 29 to 36 freshly laundered, unironed 100% cotton huckaback towels. Modern commercial variants replace towels with disposable, single-use packs containing layers of temperature-sensitive (thermochromic) porous paper and reticulated foam.
• Indicator Sheet: A Type 2 chemical indicator sheet is placed directly in the center of these layers.
• Dimensions: Standard assemblies typically measure roughly 23–30 cm in width and length, and 25–28 cm in height. [1, 2, 3, 4]

2. Indicator Sheet Specifications

• Indicator Type: ISO 11140-1 Class/Type 2 Chemical Indicator.
• Color Change: Must be distinct, non-reversible, and homogeneous. It generally changes from an initial color (such as yellow) to a dark brown, black, or uniform pink/blue depending on the manufacturer.
• Safety: Modern test sheets are 100% lead-free, non-toxic, and laminated to prevent ink-to-surface interactions
